Alexander Strauch, whose Biblical Eldership shaped many churches’ understanding of that office, gives the diaconate a parallel treatment in this book, subtitled The Church’s Minister of Mercy. He works closely through the New Testament passages on deacons and argues that the office exists so the poor and suffering of the congregation are cared for in a thoroughly Christian manner.
