Timothy Keller wrote this handbook in 1985 for the Christian Education and Publications committee of the Presbyterian Church in America, years before he founded Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City. True to its subtitle, it treats diaconal work as love expressed through mercy ministry, grounding the office in Scripture and offering practical direction for organizing a church’s care for people in need.
