One Glasgow minister, writing in the years around the Disruption of 1843, set out to argue that the Reformed churches had let a biblical office fall quietly into disuse. Lorimer traces the deaconship from Acts through the early church, the Reformation, and the standards of the Church of Scotland, then makes the case for its full revival: a distinct office, held by qualified men, given the church’s ministry of mercy.
